"I hate prison," Faith growled, banging her head against the wall behind her.
"You've been to prison before?" one of her fellow captives, a scientist named Miers asked sounding shocked.
"Did some stupid, really stupid things when I was younger," Faith said evasively. "Are they going to tell us what we supposedly did wrong?"
"Yes," a smooth male voice said from the other side of the bars. Faith looked up to see a man with a politicians pose and a lawyer's shark smile. "We will be explaining you crimes, then you will be searched and your trial will commence."
"Trial?" Faith questioned. "Are we being given fair trials?"
"Of course," the man said, sound scandalized. "All trials here a fair. We will even let you call your home and have someone sent for you."
"Of course," Faith muttered.
"The guards will search you for any weapons or forbidden items. Should you be found innocent, all will be returned to you. If you are found guilty, your personal items will be sent back to your families," the lawyer explained. "I will see you at the trial."
The first guard to enter the cell was a brick wall. Large and over muscled, he stood against the bars and watched as the others quickly searched the prisoners. Pictures, jewelery, even glasses wear taken off the others and Faith snarled as they approached her. The female guard that searched her was quick and efficient about it. No lingering touches or rude stares which was a welcome break from her jail experience on Earth. Everything went to pot when the guard tried to remove the necklace Faith wore.
"If you touch that I will break every bone in your body," she promised.
"I'm sorry," the guard said firmly. "But the law says all jewelery must be removed."
"You don't understand," Faith said warningly. "This necklace is never to be removed. if it comes off it can start a chain reaction that will more than likely end in the destruction of you planet."
The guard backed away. "I will check with the warden and see what he says." She left, motioning the others to follow her.
"Were you serious about that?" Miers asked, looking afraid.
"Yeah," Faith sighed, pulling the chain from beneath her shirt. On the chain was a ring, shining dully in the cell's light.
"A claddagh," one of the marines gasped. "I didn't know you were Irish."
"I'm not," Faith chuckled. "The person who gave it to me is though. He's pretty important back on Earth and there's a tell-tale on this that let's him know how I am. If it's removed, he will think I'm dead and react."
"Is he important to you?" the marine asked with a leer.
"Not like that," Faith shook her head. "I did some fucked up things when I was younger that landed me in jail. Angel's past was worse than mine, but he's on his way to making amends for what he's done. He and his girl gave me this ring to remind me that I'm not alone in fixing my mistakes They'll always be there for me. Friendship, love and loyalty."
"While that is a very beautiful sentiment, the rules cannot be changed," the lawyer stated walking up to the cell. "I'm sure you're exaggerating what you friend will do. Hand it over."
Faith shrugged. "It's your funeral," she said, undoing the clasp. She hand the necklace and ring over, smirking as they flashed bright for a moment before returning to normal. "You might want to contact our planet and let a man named Xander know that I am still alive."
"Is he the one who gave you the ring?" the lawyer asked.
"No, but he's probably the only one who will stop the others from coming here to slaughter you."
The lawyer laughed. "I think you overestimated your own worth and the powers that your friends may have. You will get it back if you are innocent and they will get it anyway if you are not."
Faith grinned and leaned back against the wall. This was going to be good.
Willow glanced up as one of the charms she had for Xander, Spike and Faith flashed. It was a sign that one of them was dead or very injured. Grabbing it and the others, she raced through the hotel, skidding to a stop in front of Angel and Buffy.
"Something's happened," she gasped out, holding out the now flashing red charm.
Rodney jumped as Xander straightened up from his slouch and hissed, a long drawn out sound. Before anyone in the lab could react, Xander was up and running, Rodney and Radek only a moment behind. Xander slid to a stop in the 'gate room, staring up at Elizabeth with an eye that glowed slightly green around the edges. Behind him the gate flare into action.
"Incoming message, Dr. Weir," * said. "It's not one of the teams."
"Go ahead," she ordered, her eyes still locked on Xander.
"Greetings, I am Kain, High Lord of the Methanin," a deep voice said through the speakers.
"What can we do for you, Kain?" Elizabeth asked calmly.
"You can send a representative through for the trials of your people," Kain said. "And let a Xander know that Faith is still alive."
"Why did you take her necklace?" Xander growled.
"Prisoners are not allowed to wear jewelery," Kain explained.
"The blood's on your hands then," Xander told him. He looked up at Weir. "I need to send a message to home."
Elizabeth nodded then turned her attention back to the person on the other side of the gate. "What crime did my people commit that they are being held prisoner and facing trial?"
"That will be told to the representative," Kain said.
"No, it will be told to me so that I can ensure that whomever I send through does not fall foul of your laws," she ground out.
"I'm sorry, that is one of our laws."
"I guess that means a lot of people end up being guilty of something, doesn't it?" Xander remarked. "I pity you."
"Who are you?"
"Xander Harris, the only one who can stop the coming destruction of your world."
"Don't threaten them," Elizabeth snapped at him.
"It's not a threat," Xander replied with a shrug. "By now Willow would have noticed the change in Faith's status and think she's dead. She'll tell Buffy and Angel and the three of them will be up here soon to destroy whatever harmed their friend. Only a quick message saying she's still alive will keep them on Earth."
"There's no way they could get up here in time to do anything," Rodney pointed out.
Xander smiled sadly. "Buffy is the oldest slayer and she's died twice. Once even buried. Angel is a two hundred and fifty year old vampire with an insane alter ego who makes serial killers look normal. And Willow is a Goddess-level witch in both light and dark magic. With Willow's help they will easily get here and together they can destroy a world." He paused as a sparkling light started in one corner. "And it's too late, 'cause they're here."
